ATR 42

The ATR 42 is a twin-turboprop, short- to medium-haul regional airliner. The aircraft performs well at high altitude and in hot climates and is suitable for short runway operations. In mid-2000, ATR launched a freighter conversion program for both the -42 and -72, involving installing a forward freight door and modifying the cabin for freight.

The ATR72 which is also available as “quick change” (with removal seating configuration) has one of the best fuel efficiencies among regional aircraft.

The Cessna Citation is mainly a passenger jet but suitable for the transportation of small shipments. It is faster than a turbo prop aircraft, but usually can s be more expensive. It has a range of over 3,000 km and is therefore ideal for medium haul distances. It is the best choice for those small, urgent time critical consignments to remote locations with smaller airports. The Ilyushin Il-76 is a multi-purpose four-engine turbofan medium to long range freighter. It was designed to deliver heavy machinery to remote, poorly served areas. The Il-76 has seen extensive service as a commercial freighter for ramp-delivered cargo, especially for outsized or heavy items unable to be otherwise carried. Because of its ability to operate from unpaved runways, it has been useful in undeveloped areas. Its highlight is an internal winch system that can pull the cargo inside with a max. weight of 10t. per piece.

The B757-200 is a twin-engine aircraft for medium-haul flights. There are production cargo versions as well as freighters converted from passenger versions. It can carry 15 ULDs on the cargo main deck. Additionally, freight can be carried in the below compartments. Uplift capacity range is from 34 tons to 36 tons. depending on aircraft version, flight route and the nature of cargo.

Airbus A310F

The A310F is a wide-bodied aircraft, a shortened version of the A300F. It can carry up to 39t of freight for 5,950 km. The aircraft has been designed for regional routes but with the capability to fly extended range routes with optional long-range tanks. The A-310 is ideal for transporting outsize cargo. Because it needs a main deck high-loader to load and unload cargo on the main deck, it may not be a suitable aircraft for some remote airports.

The Antonov AN12 is a four-engine turboprop built in the Soviet Union. It is a very common choice for time-critical cargo, especially heavier consignments as it is flexible for loading. It can carry many types of cargo, including outsized cargo. It is easy to load using the built-in loading system. It is popular especially in Europe and Africa.

The Lockheed L-100 is the civilian cargo transport version of the globally popular C-130 Hercules military version and have proven to be of great utility, particularly in undeveloped countries. The L-100 has excellent handling capabilities and short-field hauling qualities. Equipped with built in handling systems, ramp facilities and thrust reversers that allow the aircraft to operate without pushback, the L-100-30 Hercules is ideal for transporting cargo to remote and isolated destinations. It is also capable of taking off and landing on short runways (STOL) and rough terrain.
