We want to keep you up to date with charter trends and availability during the development of COVID-19 and the effects it is having on global supply chains. Flight operations have been dramatically affected and the situation has forced many airlines to reduce freight capacity or even suspend all services to and from affected regions. The situation is constantly evolving with new developments every day. Our experienced Freight team, with the backing of our range of world-leading aviation services, will work closely with you during this time to offer you the best solution.
Intra EU aircraft availability remains steady, with aircraft of all sizes up to B737 freighters, readily available for charter. Full and part charter cargo aircraft availability from China to Europe is very restricted with a minimum of one week lead time for traffic right permits. Availability to and from USA is good.
The urgent demand for medical equipment is causing charter rates to more than double. Whilst airfreight rates are increasing globally, Charter rates are increasing strongest on ex-China to Europe and China to US routings. In order to secure the best price, it is recommended to make arrangements as much in advance and to book the aircraft on the same day as requesting. Availability is moving very fast.
Global Demand & Capacity
Freight aircraft capacity has become very restricted, and booked through until May or June. While capacity is expected to return to the market, and this might slow the price surge. Full charter and part charter capacity is still available. There is great demand from Far East to Europe, as well as from Asia to North America, Europe and Australia.
Many passenger planes are being chartered as freighters. However, chartering passenger aircraft is difficult at the current moment, as governments are securing capacity on local carriers for repatriation flights as well as government aid flights from China. In the coming weeks ahead, repatriation will be mostly finished and then more passenger aircraft will become available.
With the focus being to expedite the delivery of aid, medical equipment and other consumable goods; various airports across have made passenger aircraft slots available to cargo operators. There are increased restrictions on non-essential cargo items in Asia and other countries, which might include electronics, houseware/furniture, fashion and retail. With countries not accepting cargo, there are also export suspensions.
As airlines switch from pax to cargo, ‘belly charters’ are increasing. There are increased efforts to deliver essential air cargo transport of medical equipment (hospital beds, ventilators, respirators), consumable supplies (surgical masks and personal protective equipment/PPE), food, necessities and health-related products such as sanitizers. Facemasks and PPE remain high priority for all EU countries and the US.
We have widebody charter options on the following routes:

During the COVID-19 we have seen a large increase in requests coming from our existing client base to transport a number of different commodities into and out of Asia. With the reduction in scheduled services and airline restrictions in some areas, it has made it more challenging for goods to get where they need to be. At Air Partner, we have remained ahead of the game to ensure we are up to date with the progressions of the COVID-19 epidemic, which has allowed us to service our clients quickly. Most recently, we were able to move hand sanitizer from the US to China for a global brand who required this as essential items to run their business. Time was of the essence for our team to work quickly on a solution, as it could have a significant impact on the business if this cargo didn’t arrive quickly. The solution for this charter was 2 Boeing 747F operating from the US to China. All permits, loading and compulsory processes were handled by us to ensure smooth running of the operation. A dedicated Freight team from our US base were on site for loading and coordination of the aircraft and the client was kept up to date every step of the way to ensure that they were aware of the timings around delivery. Whilst the team had to solve a number of documentation issues, our experience and relationships meant we could work quickly and get the aircraft airborne with no delay.
